As we age, it becomes easier to gain weight and harder to maintain muscle. Thus, our waistlines tends to fatten, our muscles weaken, and the physical tasks that once seemed trivial now seem tiring. The deterioration of mitochondria, the microscopic power plants within every cell responsible for converting food into biochemical fuel, has been implicated as a major cause. The loss of mitochondrial efficiency and number over time deprives us of living a longer, healthier life. It may come to no surprise, therefore, that mitochondrial biogenesis, the natural process in which your cells build new mitochondria, has been suggested hold the key to delay the deteriorations in appearance and performance, and even aging.
Representing a remarkable ~ 10% of body weight, mitochondria produce more than 95% of your body's energy. The more of these "fuel stations" our cells contain, the more calories you can burn, leaving less fat to contribute to diabetes or obesity, for instance. Mitochondria are produced via mitochondria biogenesis, the stimulation of which can help delay aging and maintain health as we age.[Image]
Mitochondrial biogenesis is a complicated process involving more than 1,000 genes and producing and estimated 20% of the cellular protein in the body. While caloric restriction and exercise potently activate molecular "switches" controlling mitochondrial biogenesis, a simpler solution comes in the form of the Mitochondrial Renewal Kit containing neutraceuticals shown to activate the very same switches.
XYMOGEN Mitochondrial Renewal Kit: "Three Degrees" of Restoration
1st Degree: Nitric Oxide (NO) is to your heart and blood vessels what your favorite couch is to your legs and feet. NO takes a load off of your heart and blood vessels by relaxing the latter (known as vasodilation), thereby easing the strain placed on the former (blood flows more easily, so your heart doesn't need to pump as hard). Among sundry other roles, NO directly activates the "master regulator" of mitochondrial biogenesis and function and metabolic fitness known as PGC-1a.
2nd Degree: Found in red wine and studied by respected research organizations including Salk Institute, resveratrol is one of the most promising anti-aging nutraceuticals to date. Labeled as an "exercise mimetic", resveratrol activates SIRT1, a molecular "switch" that governs the activation of PGC-1a. Exercise also activates this pathway; hence the aforementioned label.
3rd Degree: a-lipoic acid (ALA) is considered a "king" among antioxidants. Capable of fending off damaging free radicals in a variety of cellular environments, ALA also protects the levels of other antioxidants such as vitamins E and C. In addition, ALA stimulates a molecular switch known as AMPK in the body (which in turns activates PGC-1a), while inhibiting another version of AMPK located in the brain. The end result is to increase mitochondrial biogenesis (via body AMPK) while enhancing appetite control and weight management (brain AMPK).
Benefits of XYMOGEN Mitochondrial Renewal Kit:* Increased mitochondrial biogenesis* Increased metabolic (calorie-burning) rate* Improved insulin sensitivity and action* Improved glucose disposal* Increased Nitric Oxide (NO) production* Improved cardiovascular and endothelial (blood vessel) function* Improve appetite control* Reduced fat mass* Increased muscle mass* Improved exercise tolerance and performance* Improved antioxidant status and resistance to oxidative stress
A month supply is $150. This is NOT a vitamin replacement.

FINALLY!!!!
Finally! After a year of working out, eating clean and feeling as if I was gonna pull out all of my hair... I am FINALLY sitting below 150 pounds!! Yep! Today I weighed in at 148! I was feeling so good! Because actually, I have been at 148 for a couple days now :)
This is a HUGE deal for me! Because when I was doing workout program after workout program, converting to an all 100% Vegan diet, seeing a personal trainer and still couldn't drop below 150... I was running out of ideas! Ha ha ha...
I believe that the thyroid medication, good eating and continuous strength training has really pushed this weight loss. We all know I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, and that I am now taking a prescription for it. It's crazy just how powerful your thyroid really is and the importance it plays in your body.
There are many women who swear they have a thyroid issue (they have all the signs) and still their doctor won't diagnose them with Hypothyroidism and therefore won't help or offer them with treatment for it. It's very sad to me.
There may still be hope that I can compete this summer!! (crossing my fingers!!)
I've been switching up my workouts between Chalean Extreme and Insanity with a Bootcamp Class twice a week. I feel good! Before finding out all this, I was very low on energy and hadn't been working out like I usually do... actually for some days wasn't working out at all. It was very upsetting. But all is better now!! I feel really good!!
Anyway!! just had to share!! My weight goal is 135... we'll see ;)
Cheers!

So Guess What?
I have been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism.
For the past 2 months, I have been noticing some changes with myself. I can't seem to wake up at my normal morning wake up time (4:30-5am). Hell, I can't even wake up at 6am or 7am... I have a hard time getting up at 8am but I force myself to do so! Crazy right!
Other than my excessive sleep patterns (in which I have been diagnosing myself with laziness!) ;) I have also been noticing weight gain. Now mind you, I am extremely active, I eat a clean vegan diet and I am gaining weight! For the past year, I have not been able to get my weight under 150 Pounds to save my life... It's been a battle, it's been frustrating and it's wearing on me.
So while training for my first Figure Show and not losing a single pound or dropping any body fat with all the extreme dieting, my personal trainer at the time quit on me... and I quit on him.
It was mind boggling.
Since then I have been eating clean. I eat 100% Vegan and include a lot of Raw goodness in my diet. I consider my diet to be very healthy and SUPERHERO-Like ;)
I've been told by many close friends that I should go get my thyroid checked. I put the idea to the side and still tried to do things "my way." I put myself on 100% Raw Food cycles of 3-7 days at a time, continued to exercise... was continually dropping energy and still gaining weight. I sought out advice from a close friend and mentor to me and she advised me to get my damn thyroid CHECKED!!! Lol...
Ughh ok!!! I'll get it checked!!
A month went by and I finally went to a Dr. that another friend strongly recommended.
I was sent to get my blood work done... which let me tell you, I HATE BLOOD WORK!!!!!! I use to pass out EVERY time I gave blood, now I just cry, breath deep, turn pale and pasty looking but stay awake to feel EVERYTHING and experience it all!! What the hell happened?!?!? Why can't I just PASS OUT anymore and get out of the situation!!! LOL!! But I know, this is a step forward, I'm getting better... I guess... ;)
I had SIX vials of blood taken from me. I was a mess!
So anyway, the tests came back the following day and during my Dr. visit I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and low DHEA (sub optimal DHEA levels). Everything else; cholesterol, cortisol, cardiac risk ratio, triglycerides, and my blood sugar levels were all really good.
So my treatments: DHEA hormone cream x 45 days then re-test levels and 1gm Nature-Throid tablet a day for 8 weeks then re-test.
My TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone/High) is at 4.69. Normal levels should be between 0.35-2.1 So you see how far I am off the chart. In my tablets, I am getting one part fT4 to two parts fT3.
It's all a little crazy, but this a step forward in the right direction. I don't like the idea of taking the prescription because I don't take medicine for anything! If I have a headache (which I've had a lot lately) I just let it do its thing, I never reach for Tylenol. I believe food and our diet will fix our bodies... this thyroid has just got me so stumbled that I don't know what to do but try the prescription and go from there.
I was reading that taking the Hypothyroid medication is LIFE LONG... But I couldn't possibly take this for the rest of my life... there has to be another answer.
On top of me finding out I have this thyroid issue, the Dr. also gave me a B12 shot and I am on B12 sublingual drops. I'm on added Calcium and have cut all gluten out of my diet. My Dr. assumes I may have a gluten sensitivity, so we'll see.
So that's about it, that sums up my week for you! Ha ha ... It has been a busy week and extremely tiring. Today is day 2 on my Nature-Throid... so we'll see how this goes. Today I weighed in at 159 :( Yikes!! But it's ok!! It's OK!!!

Raw Cleanse Give a Way Winner!
At the beginning of the Raw Cleanse, I asked all the members 3 questions:
* What was your last cooked meal before starting the cleanse?
* How many days is your goal for your Raw Cleanse?
* What is your WHY for doing the Cleanse?
For the ones who have participated in the drawing, I wrote down the names of each, threw the names in a bowl and randomly picked one lucky winner!
Becky Haavisto Demastus is our very first Raw Cleanse FREE Give a Way WINNER!!!!
Her answers to the questions:
"The night before starting my raw cleanse I ate Penne Al la Vodka. One of my FAVORITE pasta dishes. So creamy and rich...ummm, ummm, good :)
My Raw Cleanse goal is/was originally 30 days, but I think I'm going to keep going! I continue to lose weight at a steady pace of 1-2lbs/week and I have a goal and I'd like to stay raw until I meet that goal then stay "mostly" raw once I reach my goal. My mind is so clear and I feel great!!
Why did I join? Because I need motivation to be successful in the things that I do. My friends and family think it's crazy to eat all raw so surrounding myself with people like me motivate me to keep going."
Thanks!
Becky Demastus
What an awesome goal Becky!! And you're right on, surround yourself with people like you who will motivate you to keep going!!!!
Congratulations Becky!!!!

Beginning of the Raw Cleanse (Monday March 1st) and the Announcement of the First Give A Way!
Welcome to the RAW Cleanse! You are here because YOU want to be here! You’re either looking for a short cleanse (1-3 days) or a longer cleanse (14 days) or an even LONGER cleanse (30 days and beyond). Whichever the length of your cleanse is, you will benefit with huge results!
Clearer Skin
Regularity
Shiny Hair
Stronger Nails
And so much more!
This Raw Cleanse will cleanse your body of toxins and rid your mind of old habits of poor food choices. You’ll learn the power of Raw and the importance it has on our overall health.
Take this journey one day at a time and don’t rush it! Enjoy the meals you make! Enjoy the decisions you are making. Let the food take care of you!
You will be surprised on what will come out of eating 100% Raw ☺
I imagine all of you went grocery shopping this weekend for preparation for the next few days. Lots of fresh fruits, fresh veggies, frozen fruit for easy to make smoothies and leafy greens for salads. I know! I know!! Salads may seem boring… but feel free to dazzle them up!! Add some red peppers, cucumber, tomato, avocado, sunflower seeds, dates, dices carrots, the sky is the limit.
Raw is anything prepared under 118 degrees. So if you’re wanting to dehydrate, keep the thermostat set at 117.
If anyone is new to juicing, and doesn't have a juicer... no sweat!!! Add water to a blender, your washed produce (cucumber, zucchini, celery, apple... etc.), blend it all up, then run all the liquid through a paint straining bag (or nut milk bag) to remove all the excess pulp. Discard the pulp and what is left is the JUICE!!! You may have to run the juice through the bag a time or two, but it's super easy and I find to be a lot of fun (especially with the kids).
I’ve had a lot of requests for salad dressings. I have to say that I personally recommend Kristen Suzanne’s book: Easy Raw Vegan Salads & Dressings. This book has amazing recipes that are easy to make in the kitchen. You can find the book on Amazon or by going to KristensRaw.com
Another great book to have handy to you is Raw Food Real World. This book has been a tool that I have used in the kitchen many many times when prepping Raw Recipes.
The best way to assess how many calories per day you eat is by keeping track. A great way to do this is by writing it down. Keeping a food diary is more than just writing it down. It will help you become aware of the foods you are eating and how often... it way also give you insight as to WHY you are eating them.
Great websites that are great sources for Raw:

Living Food Information:

I will be sharing recipes on the Raw Cleanse Group so be on the look out for those ☺
Stay in connection with the group!
Email me personally at RawTwitchn@Yahoo.com and/or write on the group wall stating how many days you are doing the Cleanse for. Accountability is Success!
Now!! At the end of the week there will be a GIVE-A-Way!!! YES!!! A FREE Give-A-Way to keep the group motivated! The drawing will take place on Friday night (March 5th).
I want to hear from ALL of you (those who want in on their chance to WIN): What did you eat the night before the Raw Cleanse began (Sunday Feb. 28th) and what are your goals for completing this Cleanse. Are you doing a short term cleanse or a long term cleanse (explain to me the time frame of your Raw Cleanse).
All entries MUST be in no later than Friday night at 11pm (MST) and come Midnight, I will announce the winner of the Give-A-Way!!!
The winner of the Give-A-Way will receive a box of 12: Vega Vibrancy Bars!! These bars are 100% RAW, Vegan and Energizing!!!
The Stats on these bars:
Vega Whole Food Vibrancy Bar is a sumptuous celebration of organic plant-based superfoods. Raising the ‘bar’ to a new level, Vega Vibrancy Bars:

Vegan + Superior Nutrition = SPROUTS!!
Vegan or not, everyone needs sprouts in their diet. Our bodies are being damaged inside, and mercilessly, by toxic chemical reactions. Toxic chemical additives and hazardous wastes in our air, water, and food supplies will continue to pervade our living and working environments. These toxins are returning to us in everything we eat, drink, and breathe. Thankfully, much of the internal damage they do heals automatically, like that cut on our finger. However, when our body is not adequately nourished it can't neutralize and expel these poisons fast enough. They build up in our body, and so does the invisible damage they do. Toxic build - up can severely damage our immune system.

Kristen's Raw 17th Awesome Giveaway: FREE RAW VITAMINS
It's time for another awesome giveaway (here was the last giveaway I hosted). The prize for January? RAW VITAMINS from VITAMIN CODE. I will be drawing the name of 1 winner for a bottle of their Vitamin Code Raw D3 - The Hottest Nutrient Under The Sun. (How cool of them to offer this to my readers!)
Right now, with this being winter in the United States, I suspect there are a lot of people out there who are in need of this important nutrient! Vitamin D3 is vital for many functions including to help build a stronger immune system. Here is what Vitamin Code / Garden of Life had to say about Vitamin D3...
As vitamin D deficiency has become more prevalent, the attention and focus paid to vitamin D have increased, and for good reason. Most people familiar with vitamin D understand that this nutrient is essential to skeletal system health.† Along with calcium, vitamin D is considered vital for maintaining healthy bones.† Vitamin D actually regulates the use of calcium in the body by dramatically increasing its absorption and utilization.
Much of the interest in vitamin D stems from the fact that it’s found throughout the body in over 600 receptor sites including the brain and the heart. Due to the fact that vitamin D receptors are so prevalent in the body, research has increased on vitamin D, and seemingly everyday new studies tout the health benefits of vitamin D consumption.
Recent studies have also shown that vitamin D supports immune health by helping to regulate the immune system.† The brain is home to dozens of vitamin D receptor sites, and vitamin D has been shown to enhance memory and concentration.† Vitamin D supports healthy digestion, again since receptor sites are found from the mouth all the way through the intestines.† Healthy vitamin D levels support two increasing areas of concern—breast health for women and prostate health for men.†
†These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Experiment: Raw Vegan Diet and Lifting Heavy (Week 1)
Last Friday at the gym really set me off to make the decision to go full out VEGAN for this transformation. I have been eating egg-whites, tuna, and lots of WHEY! I'm tired of it. My body wasn't digesting the high quantities of protein that I was consuming and I was remaining constantly bloated, icky feeling and not losing a single pound. At the gym, I jumped on the scale and was at a disappointing 155 Lbs (I started this transformation 9 weeks ago and weighed in at 156 lbs!!) I understand that muscle weighs more than fat, and I wouldn't let the weight bother me, but I have a goal weight for the show of 135 lbs and I MUST be close to that to compete. Being at this for 9 weeks and not budging the scale messes with your head... BUT! I won't give up!

Pre and Post Workout Nutrition
I went to bed last night reading THRIVE a Vegan Nutrition Guide written by Brendan Brazier (a vegan professional ironman triathlete) and came across information on "Nutrition Before, During and Post Exercise." I was so thrilled to read this!! Now it is mentioned in the book that "The most important factor in a pre-exercise snack is DIGESTIBILITY." Following this sentence is great information on choosing the right foods for easy digestion. Brendan also says, "The ratio of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in the pre-exercise snack is determined by the intensity and duration of the activity."

Feeling my BEST and ready for the Last 9 weeks!
I'm one week into my 12 week diet plan... and so far... I hate it!! ha ha ha... Not because I'm limited to serving sizes, but because I'm eating all animal protein!! My body is refusing it.
